The first time I walked through the turnstiles at Franklin’s Gardens was in the late 1970s, for a Boxing Day game against Harlequins, but it took until 1995 until my second visit – and then only because I was bored one afternoon and, seeing that the Saints were at home, strolled the few hundred yards to the ground. In the following years I attended more and more games until it became apparent that it was going to be cheaper to get a season ticket than to pay on the gate each time.

And my first away game? It was in 2000 when a convoy of 16 or 17 double-decker buses headed down the M1 to Watford to watch that roller-coaster cup game against Saracens.
